In adapting antique or otherwise vintage studs to a modern dress shirt I find that you must often reduce the size of the button holes to allow antique studs to function. It's a simple matter of sewing part of each button hole closed thereby reducing the size of the opening. Also, while vintage shirts used fewer studs than today's shirts, those fewer studs were often also spaced more widely.
